Day Three

This morning we visit the National Memorial Arboretum, a 150 acre site which is home to over 330 thought provoking memorials covering both military and civilian associations along with tributes to individuals. Rich in design and symbolism and sympathetic to the lush gardens they inhabit, the memorials and their stories are fascinating. This afternoon we visit Calke Abbey, the house where time stood still, vividly portraying a period in the 20th century when many country houses did not survive to tell their story. Rather than restoring Calke to its former glory, they have undertaken necessary repairs to halt the decay of the house and its collections. As you wander through the mansion, you will discover abandoned rooms, peeling wallpaper and a vast collection of strange and unique objects presented exactly how they were found.
