    HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

    Carlisle | Dumfries | Annandale | Keswick | Penrith

    DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel to Cumbria arriving late afternoon you will have time to relax before dinner this evening.

DAY TWO – Dumfries and Annandale Distillery

Today we travel to Dumfries where you are free to explore at leisure. Perhaps visit Robert Burns House, enjoy a stroll along the River Nith, browse the town’s shops and find a spot for lunch. Later we visit Annandale Distillery where they use traditional methods to manufacture single cask single malt whisky. We enjoy a tour of the facility, learning about the production. As a memento of our tour, we will receive a gift pack containing an Annandale Whisky glass and a mini bottle of Annandale Whisky to enjoy at home.

    DAY THREE – Carlisle

Today is free for you to explore Carlisle at your own leisure. We suggest that you first make your way to Carlisle Castle, there is an entrance charge. It was first built in 1092 by William Rufus, then rebuilt by Henry I in 1122. As you can imagine, the more than 900-year-old castle has been the scene of many important events in British history. It’s changed hands many times over the years too. Even Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned in the castle for a short time. Then perhaps you might like a walk around the city centre, you’ll notice the big pink building occupying the main square. This is the Old Town Hall, a Grade I listed building and dates back to 1668. It’s also where you can find the Tourist Information Centre. Then why not go inside Carlisle Cathedral, which is not far from the Old Town Hall. It’s free to enter and is highly recommended. Inside you’ll see some of the usual features you would expect to see in a cathedral, such as medieval paintings and beautiful stained-glass windows. The most significant one is the East Window, which is over 50 ft high and still contains much of the original stained glass. Another reason for popping inside is the Cathedral’s stunning blue and gold painted ceiling. The Choir Ceiling was created during restoration work carried out in 1853. We’ll then all rejoin the coach and make our journey back to the hotel for dinner this evening.

DAY FOUR – Keswick and Penrith

This morning we take a scenic drive into the Lake District to the pretty town of Keswick on the banks of Ullswater. The capital of the North Lakes the town has a range of shops, galleries, and interesting places to explore. Later we journey to Penrith where you have free time to explore before we return to our hotel.
