Day One

Day Two

Our first visit today is to the Grade II listed port of Charlestown, featured in TV’s popular drama series ‘Poldark’.  The harbour was built in the 18th century to support the china clay and copper mining industries; here we visit the Shipwreck, Rescue & Heritage Centre, telling the story of the port, ships and wrecks along this part of the coast.  For our lunch stop we move onto Mevagissey with a maze of narrow streets around the harbour.  This afternoon we make our way to the Lost Gardens of Heligan, created over a 200 year period, rediscovered and restored over the last 20 years.

Day Three

Our excursion today takes us to the Lizard Peninsula, the most southerly point in England.  Cornwall’s rugged coastline is wild and full of hidden coves and these were used as hiding places for smugglers and contraband, many had tunnels and secret passages.  Continuing on our way we take a break in Helston with time for lunch and a look around the town, this afternoon new head north to Redruth and Newquay.

Day Four

For our final outing we drive to rugged Bodmin Moor and stop at Jamaica Inn, with its Daphne Du Maurier associations and a museum filled with smuggling artefacts collected over many years.  From here we travel to the North Cornwall coast and Tintagel with its dramatic castle ruins and also the pretty harbour at Port Isaac, the setting for TV’s Doc Martin.

Day Five

This morning after breakfast we bid farewell to Cornwall and begin our journey home with refreshment stops enroute.

The Shipwreck Centre

The Shipwreck and historical artefacts on display in the centre are the largest private collection of this type on public display in Europe.

Brought together over the last 45 to 50 years, it forms the basis of one of the most unusual and interesting collections open to the public.

There are countless items from a bygone age as well as 8,000 artefacts from over 150 shipwrecks. These rare artefacts bring stories of the sea to life with rich tales of triumph, treasure and tragedy alike. The exhibition shows a tremendous range of maritime history from a locally recovered Roman amphora base to artefacts from the wreck of the Cita which occurred in 1997 off the coast of the Isles of Scilly.
