He started with a small record label called Tamla Records, which eventually became Motown Records in 1960. 

The Motown sound was defined by its catchy melodies, smooth harmonies, and catchy rhythm sections. The label’s signature sound was created by a collection of world-class musicians called The Funk Brothers, who played on almost all of its recordings. This sound was so popular that it was often referred to as the “Motown sound."

Motown wasn’t just a record label; it was a cultural phenomenon.
